Cooking tomato and basil spaghetti

If you’ve had a go at growing some basil from seed, here’s a great recipe to try out

Adding extra flavour

Herbs are very popular in cooking because they help us add more flavour to our dishes. Basil is used a lot in pasta dishes, just like this one!

For this recipe, you'll need:

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 400 gram can of cherry tomatoes in juice
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • A handful of fresh basil leaves
  • 200 grams of dried spaghetti

Step 1: Prepare your spaghetti

  • Ask an adult to help you fill a large saucepan with water
  • Add a pinch of salt and put it on high heat until the water is boiling
  • Add the spaghetti to the boiling water and cook by following the packet instructions

Step 2: Making the sauce

  • While your spaghetti is cooking, ask an adult to put the oil in a frying pan over a gentle heat
  • After a few minutes, add the chopped onion and cook for 5 minutes, stirring regularly
  • Add the crushed garlic and cook for another couple of minutes before stirring in the tomatoes and juice
  • Add some salt, pepper, the sugar and finally add most of the basil leaving a few leaves for decoration – let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes

Step 3: Serving your creation

  • Drain the cooked spaghetti before adding it to your pan of sauce, mixing them together
  • Use some tongs to help you put the spaghetti and sauce into bowls
  • Add the basil leaves on top and enjoy!
