Planting spring tulips

Tulips come in a rainbow of colours. That’s why they’re perfect to brighten up any space. Here’s how you can prepare amazing pots, ready for spring!

For this activity, you'll need:

Tulip bulbs
Soil
A pot with a drainage hole (porcelain or stone pots work best)
Trowel
Compost

Step 1: Choose your bulbs

You’ll find lots of different types of bulbs in the garden centre right now to choose from
Pick a variety of colours or your favourite colour
Store the bulbs in a cold, dark place until you’re ready to plant them

Step 2: Prepare your pot

Add some stones to the bottom of your pot to help the water drain
Fill half the pot with compost – bulbs should be planted 3 times deeper than their height

Step 3: Start planting

Spacing your bulbs is important – they should be 3-6 inches apart
Every bulb produces one flower, so you can tell how full your pot will be
If you want to add other bulbs you can – try snowdrops of daffodils

Step 4: Looking after them

Tulips like well-drained soil and a sunny spot
Squirrels and rabbits like to dig them up and eat them, so you can keep them covered with some netting
Depending on the types you have picked, most will flower sometime between March and June - the label will tell you when to expect your flowers

Tulips are a great gift to give during the holidays. Choose the colours based on who you are giving it to and what their favourites may be. They'll get a great surprise when they bloom in spring!
