Make your own mini scarecrows

Have you ever wondered what scarecrows are for? They can keep an eye on the fruit, veg and flowers in your garden by keeping hungry birds away.

For this activity, you’ll need:

  •  Lollipop sticks
  • Corks
  • Straw or wool
  • Scrap felt or material
  • Glue
  • Felt tips or paints
  • Googly eyes

You can also use any other bits and bobs you have around the house

Step 1: Get your materials ready

  1. Your scarecrow needs some clothes, so use scrap material to cut out a shirt, dress or cape

  2. If you have straw, bunch it together to make hair. If you have wool, cut it into pieces and tie together - you could even make plaits

  3.

Step 2: Put it all together

  1. Push your lollypop stick into the cork to create a head – if it’s too difficult, ask an adult to help you
  2. Then stick on your hair and clothes with glue – leave them for a while to dry

Step 3: Add the final details

  1. Your mini scarecrow needs a face – attach googly eyes to the cork head and draw a crazy smile

  2. You can use spare fabric to cut a triangle nose and stick it with glue

  3. Then you get to choose a name for your new scarecrow friend!

Step 4: Place it in its new home

  1. Use your mini scarecrow to guard your tasty home-grown fruit and veg that birds love, like strawberries
  2. You could also use it as decoration in flowerpots
