Making invisible ink

Making invisible ink

In “The Secret Garden”, a little girl called Mary works hard with her friend Dickon to transform an overgrown space into a beautiful garden sanctuary. The friends work on the garden secretly, worried that Mary’s scary uncle will be angry with them for being in a garden that has been locked up for a long time.

One way for friends to send secret messages to each other is to write in invisible ink. Let’s find out how to write our own invisible messages!

Making invisible ink

To get started, you’ll need:

  • An egg cup

  • Baking soda

  • Water

  • A cup

  • Paper

  • Paint brush

  • A small sponge

  • Lemon juice

  • A saucer or shallow bowl

Let’s get started:

Step 1:

Use an egg cup (or a similar-sized container) to measure out equal amounts of baking soda and water. Add them to the cup and mix well.

Step 2:

Write your message using the water and baking soda mixture and the paintbrush.

Step 3:

Wait for the writing to dry and then pass on the paper to your friend. Be sure to tell them what they’ll need to read it.

Step 4:

Put the lemon juice into the saucer or bowl, and then use the sponge to gently spread the juice over the paper – this will reveal the message below!
