Macramé Plant Hanger

What’s the one downside to loving houseplants? You run out of space! If your windowsills and tabletops are full of plants, but you still want more, why not make a fun and easy macramé plant hanger? That way, you can suspend your new houseplants from the ceiling and add new areas of greenery to your home

Macramé plant hanger - Materials

This activity involves cutting twine and tying knots, you should ask an adult to help get you started

For this activity, you’ll need:

  • Four long pieces of rope (each about 1 metre long)
  • A small ring (you can use a key ring or a wooden one)
  • Scissors
  • A small potted plant (for later)
Ropes

Let's get started

Step 1:

First, lay out your four pieces of rope on a table, making sure they’re all the same length. Grab all four ropes and fold them in half to give you eight strands in total

Step 2:

Take the folded end of your ropes and pass it through the ring. Pull the ends of the ropes through the loop and tighten it. This will attach the ropes to your ring and create a strong top for your hanger

Step 3:

Now that your ropes are attached, you can spread them out in groups of two. You should have four pairs of ropes. About 10 cm below the ring, take the first pair and tie a simple knot. Do the same with the other three pairs. You should now have four knots at the same level

Step 4:

Take one rope from one pair and one from the pair next to it to connect them. Tie these two ropes together in a knot about 5-10 cm below the first knots. Keep doing this until you’ve tied all the ropes, making a new row of knots

Step 5:

After you've tied your second row of knots, leave 10-15 cm of space for your plant pot. Gather all the ropes together at the bottom and tie one big knot. This knot will hold your plant in the hanger

Step 7:

Your macramé plant hanger is now ready to be hung up. Ask an adult to help you find a hook or other suitable place to hang your plant
