Spring trees
The UK is full of amazing trees that come in all shapes and sizes. Each one paints the landscape with beautiful colours, from pretty pink blossoms in spring to fiery red leaves in autumn. Here are a few trees to keep an eye out for as we move from spring into summer:
Cherry Blossom
This tree is one of the first to blossom in spring. You’ve probably already seen it’s beautiful flowers that burst into bloom for only a week or two, before falling like confetti
Hawthorn
Hawthorn trees are amazing for wildlife and can be planted as a full hedge or a single tree. They grow pink or white blossoms in May and red berries in the summer months
Fruit trees
In spring, apple trees are filled with pastel pink flowers that’ll drop off to make room for juicy apples in autumn. You can also spot cheerful cherry trees that explode with a shower of white blossoms in spring, followed by sweet red or black cherries in early summer
Types of trees
Trees can be separated into two main groups: deciduous and evergreen. Let’s take a closer look at the two groups and how they differ
Deciduous
Deciduous trees shed their leaves in autumn. They can also have unusual-shaped leaves, like stars or hearts. Deciduous trees are amazing because of the gorgeous colours their leaves turn in autumn. When they’re getting ready to drop their leaves, the colour will change from green, to brown, red, orange, and yellow. Examples of deciduous trees include:
Evergreen
Like the name suggests, evergreen trees stay green all year round. Many also have leaves that are needle shaped. Evergreen trees may not change colour in the autumn, but they will provide beautiful greenery in your garden even throughout winter. Examples of evergreen trees include:
Love your trees
Trees are such an important part of our world and without them, we wouldn’t survive. So, we need to make sure we’re doing our bit to take care of them. Here are some fun ways that you can love your trees:
Plant a tree: If you have space in your garden, planting a tree is a great way to help the environment
Water trees: Trees need lots of water to grow big and healthy, especially young trees
Don't hurt trees: Be gentle to trees – don't break their branches or carve things into their bark
Help a sick tree: If you notice a sick or struggling tree, speak to an environmental organisation to see if they can help
Celebrate 'Love a Tree’ Day: Did you know there's a special day just for trees? It's called ‘Love a Tree Day’ and it's celebrated on May 16th. On this day, we can learn all about trees and how to look after them
Not only do trees like a little love, but loving a tree makes us feel great too! Spending time in nature can turn a frown upside down and help us feel happy and peaceful
