To get started, you’ll need:
Tomato seeds
A seed tray
Peat-free potting compost
Larger pots for use as the plants grow
Tomato feed and/ or eggshells
How to grow your own tomatoes
Step 1:
Fill your seed tray with peat-free potting compost. You can use any variety of tomato plant seeds, but make sure you choose one that grows well in the UK
Step 2:
Make small holes in the compost and drop a seed into each one. Cover them gently with some more soil
Step 3:
Place the seed tray in a sunny but sheltered spot where it can get light but is safe from strong wind. Keep the seeds warm as this will help them to grow
Step 4:
Water the soil to keep it moist but not soggy
Step 5:
Once your tomato plants have grown a
bit taller and have several leaves, you can carefully move them to larger pots. This will give their roots more space to grow
Step 6:
Keep watering your plants to make sure the soil stays moist. When your plants start to flower, you can add some tomato feed or some crushed eggshells
Step 7:
Once the tomatoes are red and glossy, you can pick them and enjoy!
