Grow your own tomatoes

Growing tomatoes at home is simple and fun. You can even get them started on a windowsill, so don’t worry if you don’t have lots of space. You’ll have lots of delicious tomatoes to share with your family and friends in no time

To get started, you’ll need:

  • Tomato seeds

  • A seed tray

  • Peat-free potting compost

  • Larger pots for use as the plants grow

  • Tomato feed and/ or eggshells

How to grow your own tomatoes

Step 1:

Fill your seed tray with peat-free potting compost. You can use any variety of tomato plant seeds, but make sure you choose one that grows well in the UK

Step 2:

Make small holes in the compost and drop a seed into each one. Cover them gently with some more soil

Step 3:

Place the seed tray in a sunny but sheltered spot where it can get light but is safe from strong wind. Keep the seeds warm as this will help them to grow

Step 4:

Water the soil to keep it moist but not soggy

Step 5:

Once your tomato plants have grown a
bit taller and have several leaves, you can carefully move them to larger pots. This will give their roots more space to grow

Step 6:

Keep watering your plants to make sure the soil stays moist. When your plants start to flower, you can add some tomato feed or some crushed eggshells

Step 7:

Once the tomatoes are red and glossy, you can pick them and enjoy!
