Growing experiment

Would you like to be a scientist for the day? Here’s a fun experiment that you can use to look at how the environment effects how well plants grow

475-what-youll-need.jpg

To get started, you’ll need:

  • 3 bean seeds
  • 3 small pots or glass dishes
  • Potting soil or compost
  • Dry dirt
  • Cotton wool
  • Spray bottle with water

This experiment will help you see how different conditions effect how well plants grow

Step 1: Preparing your seeds

  • Pull apart the cotton wool and place it on a plate
  • Wrap each bean seed in cotton wool and spray them with lots of water
  • Keep spraying them once a day
  • After a week, you should see the seeds sprouting – they’re ready!

Step 2: Creating the environments

  • Plant the 1st bean sprout in a container with potting soil and water
  • Plant the 2nd bean sprout in the dry dirt with no water
  • Plant the 3rd bean sprout in potting soil but add lots of water so that it is flooded
  • Leave all three to grow for a couple of weeks before you look at the results

Step 3: Taking a look

  • After a few weeks, your seedlings should look very different
  • Take note of their colour and size
  • Why do you think they look different? Which bean had the best conditions?

We’d love to see how tall your sunflowers grow. Take a picture and share them with us by using #DobbiesLittleSeedlings and tagging us
